The fastest and most efficient method to restore a modified Pianoteq preset (whether factory or user) to its default settings —once it appears with an italicized name— is a long cursor click held about two (2) seconds directly over the preset name as it appears on the main Pianoteq window.

Whenever you are going to work on a preset, if you initially duplicate it onto your available A or B window, you will always have its initial settings that were copied, available within the adjacent window for comparisons, as you make changes on your alternate.

Once a preset appears with the word modified italicized, it seems difficult to save accidentally, since your now saving it necessitates a prompt window and your acknowledging it via a cursory click to either accept or cancel.

If you ever do save changes to any preset, unintentionally, undos restore your previous settings.

If by 'original settings' you mean the default factory presets, they are always protected. If you make any changes to a preset and save it (using a new name), it becomes a new preset. You can save as many variants as you like. When you want to back up your own settings, access them from the Preset Manager (using the folder icon next to All banks).
