Well,

now that I've taken the plunge and bought PianoTeq7... I'm having a serious look at an optimal Velocity Curve for the p120. And I conclude there is no such thing.

But there's more...

I initially thought that the p120 didn't transmit all note-on velocity data, but I was wrong; a close look at the midi inspector in PianoTeq reveals that it does. So, "what's the point of a velocity curve then," I asked myself.

To answer that question I, created an Excel spreadsheet that will draw an exponential line between two points and I can change the curve and just fed this into PianoTeq and played with the Erard Player piano to see what it did for my playing. I soon discovered that I could improve the dynamics of my playing by using various curves. And this, of course is only part of the picture, as PianoTeq offers control within the programme for a plethora of adjustments.

In conclusion...

Here's a refined curve for you to play with if you have the p120 and would like to experiment with the 1922 Erard Player yourself and see if you get the same satisfaction I did with it - but that brings me to the point that there's no such thing as an optimal velocity curve as each piece is different and demands something different from the 'pianist', the effect any given velocity curve will bring to your performance will vary according to your unique playing technique and your mood on a given day. There are simply too many variables to be able to say, this is the curve for you! I intend to have thousands of curves, for thousands of hours of fun with PianoTeq.

And to get you started, here's just one of them...

https://www.dropbox.com/s/j5g3yst8nt2zy...r.mp3?dl=0 (Bad performance snippets of Handel, Chopin and Mendelssohn)

Global Velocity = [0, 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, 29, 34, 39, 44, 49, 54, 58, 63, 68, 73, 78, 83, 88, 93, 98, 103, 108, 127; 4, 4, 5, 7, 9, 12, 16, 19, 24, 28, 34, 39, 45, 51, 58, 65, 73, 80, 88, 97, 106, 115, 125, 125]

Hi, I'm very late to this party...

I have this keyboard as well as the p515 and am in the process of thinking if I'd like to buy PianoTeq7 Standard and which piano libraries would best suit me...

Here is a sample comparison of my p120 and the NY Steinway Model D setting:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/bk672f29tcrt2...0.mp3?dl=0 (Yamaha p120)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/am690v6kwj0oi...D.mp3?dl=0 (PTeq NY Steinway Model D)

..and here are images of the Velocity and Pedal curves I've created

METHOD USED

I recorded the piano directly whilst I used PianoTeq7 to record the MIDI and then exported the audio using my curves and the NY Steinway Model D 'patch' for the comparison. I may well have to tweek it, as aurally the two sound not too dissimilar - but visually they are quite different. This could be that the p120 does not output velocities above 100 as far as I can tell, but I'm not expert...

Hope this is of interest.

Hi.

I am a proud pianoteq standard user for about a month now and I'm struggling to get the velocity curve right. I've made a few curves using the calibration feature but doesn't get it where I want. It seems like I need to have different velocity sensitivities in different registers, but I guess I would have to get the pro version for that. I know that the P-120 isn't cutting edge technology but I like it and I think the keybed works good with the internal sounds. So my question is if anyone of you have a good velocity curve for the Yamaha P-120 (the model isn't listed under the velocity curves tab) or any advice for me to create such a curve?
