Well, a long, long time ago, I was trying to emulate the sound of my 1949 Gunther 6".. it was with PT 2.0. No way... BUT now I feel I could do it with MUCH more better results. I "just" need time.... ;-) Hum , time is so expensive those days... ! OK, I'll try !

Oh, I forgot to mention: before I bought it "second hand", this piano was played in concerts by "unknown people" like Art Tatum or Duke Ellington!!!

To me it's very typical that one day I make close-to-perfect piano sound with PTQ but next day it's far from that. It's little odd because my acoustic Kawai and sampled Nord sound always same to my ears (or at least so close that I don't notice anything). I think our perceptual system pick ups different things different times and as we know, PTQ is quite multi dimensional instrument (compared to sampled pianos).

However one thing to mention here is that now when PTQ model has improved sound has became more consistent to my ears.

You know what's really strange? Every time I post an fxp after working on it, I will try it again the next day and not be nearly as satisfied with it. Going back with "fresh" ears always is so different. For example, this preset sounds so muffled to me. There is a certain color in the sound that does match my piano, but in all it is too bass heavy and dark. The change to sound recording helps a great deal, but when I made it, I thought the stereophonic setting seemed more like what the piano sounds like from the player perspective. But, it's clearly not the case! I think I will not post any more fxp's unless I am still happy with them after several days.

It is utterly fascinating to me how difficult it is to get a specific sound. BUT, it is so exciting that so much variation is possible. I feel like the sound I want is definitely possible with PianoTeq if I just live with it longer. I am having lots of fun with it, though. AND I am also getting lots of work done with it too! I am working on the Beethoven 32 Variations in C minor.

I uploaded to the fxp corner an fxp called "My_Steinway (SR Output).fxp", producing exactly the same sound as "My_Steinway.fxp" but using "Sound Recording" Output instead, so that you can see where are the mics in the "My_Steinway.fxp" preset in its "Stereophonic" Output mode and how are the other settings from the Mic section. Hope you find it useful too .

Delt, this is because in the "D4 Classical Recording BA" there are 4 mics, 2 of them being quite far away (x = 8.5 for mics #3 and #4) and thus capturing a lot of reverb. Moreover, as "Level Compensation" is ON, their level is increased to match the level of mics #1 and #2, hence the final relatively high level of reverb in this preset. On the contrary, the "My_Steinway" preset has only 2 close mics (because the OUTPUT is set to "Stereophonic"), capturing thus a lower relative level of reverb.

I recommend to use "Sound Recording" Output instead of "Stereophonic" for the acoustic instruments,

Something's up with the reverb. I think it's a bug with pianoteq: i saved the reverb preset from "D4 Classical Recording BA" then loaded the reverb preset in "My_Steinway" (this global preset) but sometimes it sets the room size to zero, or the mix value to a really low value.... strangely, even if the values are exactly the same (for example, freeze the parameters to carry them over into My_Steinway) the reverb is WAY less audible than in the "D4 classical recording" preset.

Hi Rachel, a nice 'earthy' sounding preset. We could all get a bit jealous not having a real Steinway Grand as a template. There is one at the church I attend and I've always wanted to replicate the sound of it in Pianoteq, just like you've done. Though now I think Pianoteq 5 sounds better than the Steinway at my church, which isn't sounding as good as it could. Thanks for sharing.
Are you happy with it? Tweaking could become an endless task.

It's a beautiful preset. The imperfections really make it more life-like. For similar reasons I occasionally age the instrument through the 'condition' slider, though that's of course not the same.

Hi RJ - your D4 preset is quite nice. I see that you are getting around in the spectrum profile. I have used that feature to make some of my bass-fade-to-piano presets I use here at home.

BTW, how does the very top C on your Steinway L compares with the very top C of the preset you posted.

I havent tried yet but as following your example I may try and mimic my Erard. Would be fun to compare waveforms in audacity etc and also listen to it until its ready.

So, who has successfully mimicked a real piano using PianoTeq? I just posted an FXP of my best effort at replicating my Steinway's sound. It was a really interesting exercise! I had to go nuts in the note editor with the balance of the overtones, and it was different depending on the register or sometimes just one key!

My piano is a 1925 Steinway L (5' 10'') rebuilt in 1988. It has taken a real beating over the years. I tried to capture it with all its faults.

Interested if anyone else has tried this exercise and how it went for you?
