The difference is this: when you use the "Pedal x" assignment, then this will always move pedal x, no matter which function is assigned to it (when you right-click on the pedal)!

If you just assign a controller to "Sustain Pedal", for example, that controller will ALWAYS trigger sustain pedal, disregarding any pedal settings made on a particular preset (because each of 4 pedals on Pianoteq's interface can have a totally different function in any preset!).

no. I mean in the midi mappings dialog. Let's see if this works, I'll try and link to screenshots. This is the 'standard' (i.e., minimalistic) mapping. Note the controller designations: Pedal 1-4.

When setting the parameter e.g. for controller 64, this is how it looks like in my PTQ5:

Again, note the additional list entries "Pedal 1" to "Pedal 4" at the bottom. And those seem, at least as far as I can tell, to do exactly the same as the ones above. Since I am a suspicious person, I just want to make sure I am not missing a hidden feature here so something.

Is this when you right-click on the pedals in the main window? I see 8 choices, but none of them are duplicates... here they are:

Sustain pedal
Soft pedal
Harmonic pedal
Sostenuto pedal
Super sostenuto
Rattle pedal
Lute pedal
Celeste pedal

Same with standalone or VST. (linux)

Hi, I just noticed that in Pianoteq 5 some pedal controllers seem to be duplicated. I can e.g. assign my sustain pedal to "Pedal 4 [Sustain Pedal]" or to "Sustain Pedal". The same goes for "Pedal 1 [Soft Pedal]", "Pedal 2 [Harmonic Pedal]" and "Pedal 3 [Harmonic Pedal]"; all four functions are essentially available twice. Is this a (slight) user interface bug or is there an actual difference?
