Thank you. Sounds indeed very interesting! In fact I now listened to all the demos of the "Walnut" grand, and they are indeed amazing. As much as I like pianoteq, I'll take the dust from my imperfectsamples Braunschweig upright just for comparison thanks to this thread. (I had uninstalled all of my sample pianos of yore.) Will try DonSmith's settings now.

I love pianoteq, and it sounds fantastic....but it always seems to be missing something that sample libraries have to them. Is it just because of different mic positioning/settings that need to be tweaked?

And if so, is there a setting/preset that can give the same kind of feel?

A nice soft sound. The sound is heavy and has a lot of room-noise. While its a nice sound and I can see its place in certain compositions, its not what I generally hear when listening to and acoustic piano.

Depending on which version of Pianoteq you have, I think you could get a similar sound. For a softer sound try:

What make is the piano?

Before I tried Pianoteq I had bought their "Braunschweig upright", whose strength also was in the lines of what you describe, the bass was fine there too. The mp3 njaremko linked to is a demo from the imperfect samples Steinway grand.
(1908 Walnut concert grand, it says). One can listen to further demos there, just to get an impression.

Once I exchanged a few mails with the man, and he stressed that those "imperfections" can make a piano sound great.
Since I tried pianoteq, I did not buy other pianos of them, but yes, this sound is very nice too. Now how to get similar sounds with our beloved pianoteq ...

What make is the piano?

Sure the best sampled pianos still have a little advantage in tone (a little bit more natural here and there) but with v5 this advantage of samplers was considerable reduced. For most people used to play in real grands, the superior harmonics of pianoteq make the difference.
