I'm using a Macbook (the older white, plastic one -- not even a pro model) with a firewire external interface. The specs on that machine are: CPU 2.13 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM. 240GB SSD.

I actually ran Apple's MainStage and PianoTeq at the same time (using PianoTeq for piano and MainStage for other synth/pad/string sounds). Using PianoTeq and MainStage gives my CPU a workout, for sure (I would expect this would not be such a workout for newer machines). But, I never experienced any drop-outs, cracking, or noticeable latency.

I always have the volume slider on my controller keyboard (a PC3x) all the way down and ready to go in case the computer fails, but so far I haven't needed it. By the way, I've done many gigs (including 3 full-on musicals) with this Mac and MainStage, so it is fairly proven in my book. Adding PianoTeq to cover the piano was the 'new' element, and so far it has been nothing but great.

Just a follow-up...

I've now done 2 gigs with PianoTeq as my main piano (one a theatrical production, the other a dueling-piano gig). I still can't get over how expressive it is. It is really a joy to hear and play.

It's the version 4.5 who give me satisfaction, before I like Pianoteq but the sound was no real for my hear.
And now I'm like you, I play my sampled pianos rarely, Pianoteq is so fonctionnal.

Good choice! I've been using Pianoteq since 2007 and it has seen some major changes in that time...
I really LOVE the sound and it fits every type of music for me... even dance as you can tell from my thread:

Finally took the plunge with PianoTeq

I've been messing with PianoTeq's demo for a looooong time. I was mucking around with a live keyboard setup, and just for fun I fired-up PianoTeq and switched the output to mono -- that was enough. The piano sound/feel I got through that system was just great (I've always appreciated the stereo when sitting in my home studio, but for some reason I'd never experimented with mono-output through a PA).

This is amazing software, and I'm really looking forward to the improvements in version 5. I've started with the Stage version for now...we'll see if I need the mic placement enough to move to standard.
