The sympathetic resonace slider seems to be the answer to my problem. Unfortunately, this control is not part of the STAGE interface. Looks as if I may have to spring for the STANDARD version. This would probably solve my other immediate problem with adding presets from the fxp corner.

Hello Allan,

I was not aware of this sonic characteristic until you mentioned it. The effect you heard is also heard on my system.

The sonic effect you describe is definitely related (mathematically) to the sympathetic resonance slider. When you slide the sympathetic resonance slider completely to the left, its minimum value, the bad sounding sonic effect goes away -- but the desirable qualities of sympathetic resonance also go away. When you slide the sympathetic resonance slider completely to the right, it the bad sonic effect is made that much worse.

The good folks at Modartt do follow this forum closely; perhaps they will chime in. Thank you for making this sonic effect known.

Noise in Sustain Mode

I have a question concerning PT/STAGE 4.2 in sustain mode: with the damper pedal depressed, when I press a key in the upper register (and the higher the note the more noticeable the effect), along with the note I hear a hollow-sounding hiss or metallic ringing; and the effect is more or less depending on which piano I select (it is most noticeable in Bluethner and D4 and least so in K1). I am not referring to pedal noise here which I have turned all the way down.

If I press the key first and then the pedal there is no effect.

This effect is, if anything, more pronounced when I use the mouse to press keys on the PT interface keyboard.

I do not notice any effect when playing MIDI files.

Is this noise a characteristic of the modelling – such as harp resonance for example? If so, is there a parameter that controls it? If not, then I apparently have a problem peculiar to my setup as I was unable to find reference to it on the PT website.

Here is my setup:

Roland HP302 digital piano
Roland HP302 built-in USB/MIDI interface
HP Pavillion dv9700 laptop
2.0 GHz CPU in performace mode
Linux Mint 12.04 OS
Soundblaster SB-1290 external sound card
Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Headphones

Any comments or ideas?
