It doesn't say for what version this upgrade is valid for.  On the PTQ website I notice two different upgrade versions.  One for standard to pro and one for play to pro.  They are priced quite differently.  This one doesn't say which it is.  You reckon this would work as an upgrade from either version?

The roland keyboard is indeed impressive like you say.  It would be an interesting option to combine the two and as you say they work nicely together so that would dismiss any redundancy concerns.

I think though I've pretty much decided on the k2600 + pianoteq however.  Apparently the k2600 is a bit of a beast of a synth as well and I can get lots of other sounds out of it.  For the price this is pretty hard to pass up.

The point about trying to find an old version and then upgrading might be just the thing actually.  I am UK based indeed so I'll have a look in some local music shops.  Its worth the effort perhaps if this can be done.

Yes, they're going through a mixer to my headphones, so by default are mixed unless I turn one of them off! I was actually playing the D4 the other day thinking the attack was slightly more present than I remembered, when I noticed I had a bit of supernatural mixed in I've tried mixing in other ways, but the different velocity response, and subtly different tuning can cause issues. I tried just adding in the attack of the 700NX by giving it a fast decay, but it sounded a little odd.

If you can find a local shop that has an OLD copy of PTQ Standard in stock you MIGHT be able to convince them that it is obsolete and should therefore be HEAVILY discounted.

I was able to do exactly this almost a week ago via a USA web order. {I am also in USA}
It arrived a couple of days ago and within minutes of registering it I was able to update to the very latest release 4.0.2.
Modartt really DO honor their promise of free upgrades within a year of first registration and it doesn't matter if the CD was on a re-seller's shelf for 5 years.
It is the date of initial registration that counts, not the release date.

It has been interesting to be able to play with 2.1 and catch up on what some of the early adopters have been talking about on the earlier releases. 
I would have missed the fun of that if I had bought V4 straight away :-D

PTQ Standard may be LISTED at 249 Euros, but you don't have to PAY that.

For what it's worth, I think the FP7F keyboard and supernatural piano is great and a good companion to Pianoteq. I actually have the RD700NX stage piano which has virtually the same keyboard but a few more supernatural sounds than just the grand piano (eg electric pianos).

The interesting thing is that when I switch between 700NX and Pianoteq, I always miss something in the previous thing I was playing. With pianoteq, I miss the clarity, attack, and "woody" resonance of the 700NX. But with the 700NX, I miss the feeling of playing a real instrument, and the beautiful complexity of sustained notes that you get in Pianoteq.

I do that with my Kawai CA63 and Pianoteq and find that I can get some very nice tones that way.    Sometimes just a touch of CA63 with Pianoteq, sometimes just a touch of Pianoteq with CA63.   The options are endless and can be very satisfying.

Would you recommend the standard version or the play?  There is a big difference in price between the two versions.

You can purchase the Roland and if you are not happy with it you can hook it into a computer and run Pianoteq.

I'm in the market for a digital piano and am pondering a few options.  A roland fp7f perhaps (its got something called supernatural piano engine - its very hard to discern what the hell this is from piles of roland marketing documentation) or a combination of a kurzweil k2600x and pianoteq 4. 

I have a mate who is willing to sell me his kurzweil and it is in near new condition as far as I can tell.  The k2600 + pianoteq is a cheaper option.

I like the feel of the keyboard on the roland (its quite impressive actually) and the sound is very convincing as far as I can tell in the store but I don't mind the k2600 keyboard either.  Its not as evolved perhaps but it has a good enough feel.

I'm leaning towards the pianoteq setup which is why I signed up here but its a bit of a chicken/egg problem for me right now because I haven't the keyboard to try out pianoteq proper.  I'm going on youtube videos and various opinions I can google around.  I can go to the store and play the roland that's no problem but can't quite as easily demo pianoteq so I thought I'd ask the question here.

Which would you guys recommend?  How does the pianoteq stack up with this so called supernatural engine?

The excessive amount of marketing from roland has me worried (even on youtube its difficult to get an independent video on a fp7f) but the thing is pretty impressive in person.
