As the device uses optical sensors it seems odd that the user guide states "virtually no mechanical contact with keys or action" rather than simply "no mechanical contact with keys or action" - but maybe it's just a mistake in the manual.

Actually I contacted the QRS salesman in Holland a few weeks ago. Indeed there's a 20% discount on the QRS PNOscan if you have a valid PianoTeq license. Here in Holland the strip costs 1095,- euro and with discount "only" 876,-.
I was thinking of building a DIY digital piano from an old piano (keys+hammers) and include the strip....that idea is off now for other reasons....

As far as I understood from the conversation it sends normal (no high definition) midi.

I think you might have the discount thing backwards, I believe it is 20% off on Pianoteq with the purchase of PNOscan.

Your best bet may be to contact QRS with your questions, including the feasibility of using it with the Nero.

You say there is room for the optical sensors. Does this include leaving the mechanical sensors in place? Removing them might adversely affect the feel of the key strike. You might need to put a dummy strip or something in their place.

I'm sure the best possible controller for Pianoteq would be the keybed from a grand piano with PNOscan. I'm not convinced that even if it would work with the Nero it would offer any benefit over plugging in a different mainboard that could be detected without laboratory equipment .

A much cheaper experiment would be to get the sl990xp mainboard which sells for $99 in the US, and just plug it in with case open. I'm betting that all your flakiness and velocity issues would just disappear. Even better, if you could get the Doefper PK88 mainboard.
