A small upright piano with a small sound, usually. The mics are apparently placed in such a way as to make it sound very different (bigger, more resonant) than any spinet I remember hearing.

Ah, thanks for clarifying . In French we have the word "epinette" which is a small harpsichord, and I wasn't aware of this other meaning of "spinet".

I'll confirm that "spinet" means "small" in North American piano and organ marketing. It will be an "apartment size" upright.

I suppose spinet in the US is also a synonym for small upright. Here is the instrument refered to in the file's legend: http://for-sale.yakaz.com/lester-spinet-upright-piano

The poster also mention owning a "1903 Haddorff Upright, rescued from a family room". A friend of mine owns a Haddorff (small upright with real ivory keys, but maybe not so old) and the sound is very similar to these recordings...

I am as surprised as you are, this does not sound at all like a spinet. I hear hammers, not plectrums. Maybe a file mismatch?

Hard to believe it's a spinet, to me, but it is. Wonderful coming together of the temperament, the piano, the tuner and player, and the music.
