Hi Ian - I think Bedfords album was called 'the Odyssey'
And yes Genesis and Anthony Phillips come to mind too and considering your feel for orchestration you will probably also like 'Tarka' by Anthony Phillips and Harry Williamson (from 1988)

Ole, many thanks indeed for your keen interest. Early Genesis is indeed a great inspiration for me. You'll find lots of references to them in my first album which I think you've purchased (warmest thanks for your support - I really appreciate it).

I've thought of using the Pteq Yamaha CP80 with a good sloshing of chorus for a future track for a real mid-era Genesis Tony Banks salute.

I wonder if Modartt might consider the RMI electric piano as a companion to the CP80? I've got a soundfont of one patch which I've used on previous work, but I understand the RMI offered quite a few sounds. That really is "The Lamb" territory!

Standard version - I felt the Play version would be too limiting for me - but can't afford Pro just yet!

I recorded this before buying the YC5 add on along with the electric pianos. And yes, it does cut through nicely, but I think I prefer the richness of the M3.

Verrry nice. I had to channel an ancient and brief infatuation with the Moody Blues to adjust to the spoken word poetry, but once I recovered from the initial shock it was clear the words were more than schlock faeriism, not to disparage, ha. The section I was most interested in was the rock section and how good pianoteq sounded therein. Really impressive! Nice, full natural and not muddy tone. Although very well composed and played, I was a little less enthusiastic about the intro, which had a bit of that for lack of better term "rubbery mid" feel to it. Rather a trifling criticism, and certainly one coming from a novice. I seem to think in my quite superficial knowledge of pteq possibilities that the Yamaha has quite a bit of cut (stage mix) while retaining more air than the m3. I would guess that you are a pretty advanced user-- which version are you using?

Anyway, thx for posting. I'll have a listen to the other when I can.

Pianoteq in the mix

Dear All,

I've just uploaded two mp3s featuring Pianoteq in respective track mixes. "Idle Hill-192" and "The Soldier-224", which are two tracks from my second album.

I used to use the Art Vista Virtual Grand Piano until recently when I changed over to Pianoteq.

"Idle Hill-192" (track title, "On the Idle Hill of Summer" inspired by A.E. Housman's poem, part of the Shropshire Lad cycle of poems) required a modern sounding piano owing to the 'minimalist' arpeggios. It features the M3 and the fxp was a modified version of 'Jakes Steinway' which should still be on the fxp corner.

"The Soldier-224" (track title "The Soldier") is inspired by the Rupert Brooke war poem "The Soldier" (Sonnet V), and required an early 20th century piano. The Pleyel was perfect for this.

Although the realism of the Art Vista Grand Piano (a sampled Steinway) was formidable, its playability and versatility were not. Working with Pianoteq in track mixes is generally very rewarding because of the amount of parameters available and the beauty of the mic placement settings. However, at times, I have found it hard for the higher frequencies to cut through, but normally, careful EQing sorts this out. Using the hammer felt slider also helps, but too much of this sacrifices realism.

There's more Pianoteq on the album ("Out of the Woods", to be released soon), but these two tracks seemed to be the most appropriate to share.
