Something like Le merle noir to start with, perhaps. Almost all Digital Audio Workstation software has the capability to change the replay speed of a sound sample, which makes transcription of birdsong an almost mechanical exercise. The charm of course is that birds are free from brain conditioning, labotomies, pavlovian response, and stockholm syndrome.

I guess once technology becomes sufficiently advanced, it will become possible to read minds, and see and hear and even feel exactly the same as the person who's mind is being read.

The idea of such devices overriding free-will is scary. Almost anything's possible, I suppose, but I don't think that free-will will ever be allowed to be subsumed by technology unless it falls into the hands of absolute tyranny.

Still, brain conditioning, labotomies, pavlovian response, and stockholm syndrome, etc exemplify the already very real techniques of removing any trace of human individuality.

This new technology could go even further, I fear. It could either be of immense benefit, or disastrous malevolence to humanity. But then, it is no different to any previous potentially constructive or destructive breakthroughs in scientific and technology.

Nice one, Beto!

I lolled at that, I have to admit

For sure, Sigasa, there will always be a place for traditional instruments and manual labour.

But much in the same way that the piano was a technical marvel for its time, I'm certain that the evolution of such devices could accommodate both styles of play! Perhaps even at the same time?!

Now that would be marvellous!

Imagine having a symphony being created on the fly by your brain, and your hands and feet all over keys and pedals of a Grand!

Crikey, now that would require a lot of processing power! And I'm not just talkin' 'bout Intel's latest Core I7000! Such a feat would probably trigger the next stage in human evolution!

Can I be any more exclamatory!?

Probably not.

Funny Beto, your pics are always hilarious!!!

In answer to the threads question, it's possible even if not probable!!!

To be absolutely honest, part of the thrill of playing an instrument is, er, playing the instrument!!! I love it when I have made a piece so much part of me that it just
feels so beautiful under my fingers. I for one would not want to bother creating music with my head!

Also I think that is part of the reason we all seek the 'best piano action/best PianoTeq sound etc.. We wish to create/recreate the experience as closely as possible to that of playing a real flesh and bone piano! [No jokes please Beto!!! ]

In line with some of my more outlandish requests, I have been thinking of the possiblities technology might bring to music performance and creation.

This is not a genuine request for a pianoteq feature now, but rather an exploration of music unihibited by the limits of physicality and timbre that current non-virtual instruments impose.

So, is anyone a bit more knowledgeable on the subject of neuro-muso-science? And would anyone know of any studies relating to the brain's pitch recognition?

A quick search reveals IVBA Interactive Brainwave Visual Analyser

I haven't a clue how good this is: http://www.ibva.co.uk/Templates/music.htm

Theoretically such a device could be used with pianoteq. But whether it's currently accurate enough to pick up and translate rhythm, pace and also multiple notes I do not know.

Although I'm gradually getting better at actually playing the keys, most of the music I can imagine is lost in the translation.

Some day I hope we'll all be able to perform concertos with our eyes closed and arms crossed, in, ooh I dunno - "Encephaloteq"?

Any thoughts?

-Tony
