Christian Palmer (1811-1875) was a German composer. He lived in Tübingen (Germany) for many years and worked as a professor of practical theology and ethics at the University of Tübingen. Christian Palmer had a particular musical talent and, alongside his professional work, also composed sacred songs.
The sacred song ‘Mache dich auf, werde Licht!’ is a composition for mixed a cappella choir (SATTBB) and begins with a passage for four-part male choir, before continuing in a four-part mixed choral setting. The lyrics refer to the biblical passage in Isaiah 60:1–3 and describe a prophetic promise of the coming light in God and, with it, the end of darkness for the nations. In the final bars of the composition, the exhortation “Therefore, arise and become light” is emphasised by a striking vocal line in the male voices. The hymn is also included in the New Apostolic Church’s choir songbook under No. 9.
