			<content type="html"><![CDATA[<p>MPE is what it is: it&#039;s just an acronym. But It boasts about doing what MIDI always did before 2.0: channel independence and Mono Mode, meaning 16-voice/channel polyphony.</p><p>What I&#039;m trying to say is that emphasizing the polyphonic side (mPe) is pure marketing. Sure, there is engineering behind it, but if in the end, as you say, the polyphonic aspect matters the least, because it&#039;s physically impossible to play multiple things with different dynamic and pitch evolutions, then it becomes purely conceptual. It has relevant implications for software, hardware, concepts, and marketing, but it has minimal impact on a musician&#039;s day-to-day life.<br /> (This reminds me of what’s happening with cars nowadays. They have so much electronics and connectivity that when you buy one, you spend a good chunk of time turning things off just to end up with a basic car and drive the way you always have).</p><p>What would actually be interesting is a channel pressure feature, like channel aftertouch, that allows you to control volume and/or timbre from the moment you start pressing the keys down. It would feel like you&#039;re blowing into a wind instrument or drawing a bow across violin strings, moving beyond the simple hammering of a piano. I guess 80% of the time people are looking not for _polyphonic_ but for _continuous_ aspect of the control. For me personally this is an extremely rewarding feeling to have direct continuous tactile connection with the sound rather than losing this control after the key press and delegating e.g. the piano hammer to do the thing for you. This does not work well with all the timbres but when it works — it delivers. And now the question: how do we properly implement such continuous control if a person wants to do such a simple gesture as gradually pressing a chord or gradually lifting fingers while pressing a chord until the chord fades out completely? Even if the person is not really intending to give each note its own individual voice. How do we choose what data to send from the control surface to the synth? The maximum of the pressure values for all currently pressed notes? The minimal value? The mean? The median? And the answer is: MPE becomes not an overcomplicated, but actually a very _natural_ way to send the data from such control surface even when polyphony is not the main goal: just send the information about what each finger does without aggregtion/simplification/loss and let the synth engine decide what to do with it. And the instrument choice will definitely impose some artistic limitations, that&#039;s normal. 			<content type="html"><![CDATA[<p>what you’re saying is all well and good, sure, but show me some examples of musicians using the “P” in MPE in some way (excluding promotional videos, where you can see it, but where they’re obviously stretching it a bit).<br />We see video after video of people playing the Linnstrument, the Osmose, the Seaboard, etc., they’d be part of that minority you’re talking about, but the reality is that they use them monophonically or in two-part parts (as has always been done with a split, by the way) (oh, and by the way, I don’t know how many videos would remain from that pile if we ruled out the promos, whether real or staged).<br />And as for the Osmose, how do you play a pianissimo vibrato? Because the only way to use horizontal finger movement is by applying a certain amount of pressure to the key—otherwise, your finger just slides across the key instead of pushing it (or would we have to use magnesium?).<br />And when you’re holding a key down with one finger and doing vibrato, how many fingers on that hand are you using? So to each their own.</p><p>As for MPE as a software feature, I frankly see no reasons why in 2026 a software synth (which is not a vintage synth emulation) would choose _not_ to have it. Per-note expression is a standard feature of VST3 and MIDI 2.0 protocols after all. Same for me for tuning systems support (like MTS-ESP) — not everyone is going to use it, but I see no reasons in not supporting it on the software architectural level. Most acoustic keyed instruments are non-MPE, and pianists and organists have been playing them for ages perfectly fine.<br />2. Guitar and similar stringed instruments are essentially acoustic MPE instruments as each finger is a direct driver of an independent string. It would be puzzling for a guitarist even to imagine hammer-ons and pull-offs not as string-scoped but as instrument-scoped actions.</p><p>Modern control surfaces like the Linnstrument, Haken Continuum, Osmose, Exquis and others are by design closer to how guitar works as each contact point of the human body with the control surface is being tracked individually. When I&#039;m holding a chord on my Linnstrument and move just one finger horizontally it would be very unintuitive for me if it made the pitch of all the notes of the chord shift. Of course whether you even want to make these gestures would depend on the type of music you play. For traditional instrumental music this may be a rare occasion indeed, while for experimental and ambient stuff this may be more relevant. So to each their own.</p><p>As for MPE as a software feature, I frankly see no reasons why in 2026 a software synth (which is not a vintage synth emulation) would choose _not_ to have it. Per-note expression is a standard feature of VST3 and MIDI 2.0 protocols after all. Same for me for tuning systems support (like MTS-ESP) — not everyone is going to use it, but I see no reasons in not supporting it on the software architectural level. 			<title type="html"><![CDATA[Questions about Osmose, MPE, and Airteq]]></title>

			<content type="html"><![CDATA[<p>This is a question that came up for me just recently: since it’s already difficult for a keyboardist to play a good monophonic solo—with expressive control (MIDI Monophonic Expression)—with the right hand playing the notes, perhaps using aftertouch, the left hand controlling pitch bend and/or the mod wheel, maybe breath control with the mouth, and an expression pedal with the foot, it seems extremely difficult—if not impossible or absurd—to me to try to do this polyphonically.</p><p>I had an Osmose in my hands for a few days, and that’s exactly what I thought: Will anyone be able to do anything interesting with this? Airteq already offers patches designed for MPE, and I’m dying to see someone use them with an Osmose—or another device of that style.</p><p>The questions are:<br />Am I being eccentric for thinking it’s impossible for a single person using an Osmose or similar device to control—in real time and with even minimally acceptable precision—the temporal progression of multiple note lines, each on its own channel, with its own volume, pitch, etc.?<br />And:<br />What’s the point of MPE, really?
