Buxtehude's style of composition had a great influence on other composers, such as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Buxtehude is considered one of the most important composers of the 17th century.

Buxtehude is known primarily for his organ compositions. He also composed excellent vocal and harpsichord pieces.
