Heinrich Schütz (1585 - 1672) is one of the most important German composers of the early Baroque period. He lived and worked for many years in Kassel and Dresden (Germany). He had a decisive influence on musical life in his own time and beyond, and despite difficult circumstances – such as the Thirty Years’ War – he created an extensive body of work of high quality and musical ingenuity. The focus of his compositions lies on sacred vocal music. Heinrich Schütz is still regarded today as a musician of world renown.
The song ‘Wohl denen, die da wandeln’ is a four-part composition from 1628. The text is an adaptation of Psalm 119 by Cornelius Becker. The hymn praises those who live their lives in accordance with God’s Word and His commandments. Heinrich Schütz’s simple melody underscores the grateful and humble nature of the text: the believer asks God for guidance so that he may walk the right path. The hymn is also included in the New Apostolic Church’s youth hymn book (Dich loben wir) under No. 45.
