Studiologic controllers checked all the boxes for me in their simplicity and their relative disregard of the industry trend toward direct software integration. I've now had 2 of them in a row start to go south after only a year. I've just gotten my Grand back after not 1, not 2, but 3 keybed replacements. Thing was in the shop for two months and the American distributor kept sending new keybeds with the same sticky keys I was originally complaining about. Even the repair guy was dumbfounded by the lack of quality control.

I think it's over for Studiologic. This isn't going to have a happy ending for me, I'm quite certain of that. About the only silver lining was that all my work was under warranty.

In short, I'm looking elsewhere, and open to suggestions about something that might hold up.

I had to RMA 3 SL88 GT MK2s. The vendor then opened and tested another 3. Scratchy feel while trilling between to adjacent keys, weird noises, feel. Sweetwater in the end cherry picked one and tested it to my specifications after sending them video evidence of the problem and in the end I got a decent one. Its not perfect and some keys have a weird feel and make slight noises that I can hear and feel each time I play certain notes but I'm overall happy with it. Don't think I'd ever go down the Studiologic route again.Once the shine wears off, I'll probably open this thing up and tune it to my likeling.

Yes I considered that and also tried with the Focusrite; please note that I do need an external audio device for some serious output (2x TS jack) to feed my PA especially when doing live gigs. So using the built-in audio-output of the iPad isn't good enough.

But the point is that also at a gig you want to have as less equipment as possible, so the SL was a dream setup. Just plugging in the iPad and you're good to go. Like their website says "professional grade audio interface" one would expect also to have a good setup for live gigs. But maybe it was just related to the quality, not to playability :-) And then...the Focusrite is still better in clarity and performance.

As fas as your suggestion concerns, just using it as a controller not as audio isn't that bad but that's not how it should be. Not in my case anyway.

It has a very very nice keybed although a bit on the stiff side. For me personally I prefer be a bit lighter like a Nord Piano....although...having a price-difference of nearly 3000 euro.... I didn't get any escapement feel of the keybed. I find the keybed very precise; I hardly miss a key with this one while playing quick runs or doing strides.

Very very positive: just plug in an iPad with Pianoteq (running in AUM) and start playing. No extra devices and cables.

The only thing that I'm struggling with at the moment is the connection between key and sound. There's some latency involved and there is not much to tune with the onboard audiodevice which runs at max 48Khz. Sound-wise: it has a decent quality (more than enough for a live gig) but a Focusrite 4th gen for example is more clear.

Why not use the iPad as the audio interface? And the SL just for MIDI? Probably lower latency that way
