All of that is correct; there are many parameters available—especially in Note Edit—to address that supposed problem. Although I think this is an issue that comes up here from time to time: we tend to compare Pianoteq with sampled models, which involve engineering similar to that of recorded pianos—not real ones, which serve as the model for Pianoteq.

And that varies greatly depending on how you use it: if you play isolated notes or chords (or slow music), you can benefit from that “mastering-like” finish, but the more complex your performance is (many notes, lots of resonance, heavy pedal use, repeated notes), the more you’ll find all that to be excessive, because it wasn’t designed for that kind of use, and the sound will become too thick, and compressors/limiters or whatever will kick in to prevent the dynamics from blowing out—whereas that’s where Pianoteq shines like the sun, because it works like a piano, not like a collection of recorded piano sounds.

That said, you only have to look at the vast number of presets for each model—all so different from one another—to see the enormous possibilities available, both in terms of the model itself and the post-processing effects (compressor, equalizer, etc.).

Stephen_Doonan wrote:

RudieV wrote:

My wish is that the lower notes have more impact. I know that a lot of VST-pianos have an over-emphasised bass response but the bass response in Pianoteq seems too 'polite', I don't feel the bass. Not enough resonance? Hope this will be corrected, or at least given the opportunity, in a next release or update.

I have to admit that I not very 'deep' into Pianoteq and perhaps I miss the know-how how to achieve this. If someone can enlighten me I would really appreciate it.

Greetings,

Rudie

Try adjusting the main Equalizer (as contrasted from the equalizer in the Effects pane, which of course can also be used to accentuate the bass range), increasing the levels for bass-range frequencies in the Main and possibly the Res EQ and Res Dur tabs of the main Equalizer to suit your preferences. In addition, if your version of Pianoteq includes the NoteEdit functionality, try adjusting, for the bass range only, the Hammer Hardness and perhaps the Volume, perhaps the Spectrum Profile for each note of the bass range, and/or other parameters.

Not exactly a wish list for Pianoteq but as an idea for a new project: I think Modartt should seriously consider making their next physical-modeling project specifically about acoustic aerophones — whether that means trumpets, accordions, bassoons, Indian harmoniums, various ethnic flutes (bansuri, suling, duduk, kaval, etc.), historical instruments (baroque oboes, shawms, crumhorns, etc.), and so on.

Audio Modeling (SWAM) are already doing something like this, but with all due respect to them (I own some of their products), I have a feeling that Modartt could do it better. Besides, I think this could also be very good from a business perspective. After all, at the end of the day, developers need a stable and sustainable source of income from as broad an audience as possible, and that is perfectly fair.

1.The customer would purchase the general "engine."

2.The customer would then purchase each individual pack they need separately (roughly following the Pianoteq model).

This way, the developers would not have to take the risk of working on a huge project without being reasonably sure how quickly it would pay for itself. At the same time, they could reach an extremely broad audience, because this could cover everything from ethnic music, jazz, and pop to classical music from different periods and schools, including historically informed performers.

Essentially, what I am proposing is a physically modeled equivalent of EastWest Ethno World and Spitfire BBC Symphonic Orchestra and everything in between combined into a single ecosystem — but specifically for aerophones. And the number of potential future add-ons would be practically limitless.

I have absolutely no doubt that there would be enormous demand for this. VST musicians are constantly hunting for "exotic" ethnic-instrument libraries, historical instruments, and so on, but the quality and capabilities of these libraries are usually disappointing.

If something like a truly deep physical model of this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fue_(flute)

were to appear on the market or, for example, a "Baroque" pack (or single instruments) featuring relatively exotic instruments such as the chalumeau, oboe d'amore, etc., it would be a sensation in the VST world.

Also makes it easier for me to import recordings from a disklavier/prorecord into pianoteq.

An idea for new (or updated) instrument: pedal harpsichord. I feel that this would be a relatively simple task for Modartt. In fact, I tried to simulate at least a basic version of a pedal harpsichord (16' register) myself, in a very rough and preliminary way: I created two copies of the Hans Ruckers II, and in one of them I simply doubled the string length. The result already sounded quite good.

Of course, if this were approached professionally, other parameters would also need to be adjusted, and in a much more scientifically rigorous way — including possibly some parameters that are accessible only to Modartt and not to Pianoteq Pro users. But overall, I don't think this would be a particularly difficult task for the developers (although perhaps adding an additional pedal keyboard to the interface would be less straightforward than I imagine).

My "rough version" of a copy of the instrument having extended strings of course is extremely inconvenient and impractical: any change to the instrument's general settings, such as microphones, tuning, etc., has to be made separately in both copies. So it would be really great to see a proper pedal harpsichord added to the Modartt collection, either as a separate instrument (for example, a physical model of a modern pedal Neupert, or simply something a la U4, i.e not a virtual copy of some real instrument but an “original Pedal Harpsichord from Modartt”) or even as an optional update applicable to all harpsichords and harpsichord-like instruments, provided that this is indeed relatively simple and would not take too many development resources away from the tasks currently on the roadmap.

I feel that such an instrument would be interesting not only to me. And, as far as I understand, this would actually be the first-ever VST implementation of a pedal harpsichord.
