I think you might be able to repair factory presets by simply reinstalling it.

If you have been trying to hide the presets for the instruments you weren't going to buy and you can do this in the software itself without having to try and butcher it.

Within the menus you can see the list of preset packs you already have, and the ones you can choose to buy.
Next to the option of buying a pack you can also choose the option to hide any given pack you have not already bought.

Thank you Key Fumbler, I may try the reinstall but it's not critical. trying to hide presets is not the issue for me, but rather a quirk in the UI I was not aware of. Hitting return to complete the deletion I highlighted (a user preset) apparently deleted a preset elsewhere on the list. I'll chalk this up to pilot error - still learning the UI.
