Yes, I too was frustrated by this, until I discovered the stage manager trick. That solved it for me. It's also nice because you can still see some iPad stats like battery remaining, time, etc.

iPads are being used mostly in Portrait mode for reading scores.
Pianoteq runs at the same time.
But its always a bit irritating to see Pianoteq rotated.

It would be cool if it would adjust to the current Screen Rotation.
