I haven't been so ambitious as you would like to be - but you have sent my mind working! With the Ruckers I set the una corda pedal to the buff stop, both 8's and set the sostenuto to upper 8' and the sustain to 2x8'.  The lower and higher notes are indeed set to different configurations, e.g. each 8'4' and the two 8's plus 4', but I find that I can only switch from my basic 2x8', upper8' and buff quickly - via the pedal. Switching for example from upper 8'  to lower 8' - useful for French Rondeaux pieces, which are many - by pressing the appropriate key takes too long. So allocating midi note to different configurations of an instrument does work. Hope this helps.

In a related question, would it be possible to extend this idea to multiple MIDI notes?

For example, could I set MIDI note 21 to be the Steinway D, MIDI 22 to be the Petrof, MIDI 23 to be... etc.? This would be very useful rather than having to use the mouse/keyboard to switch.

I'm using the latest versions of Pianoteq Pro on the Mac and iPad.
