I think it's similar to Roland's SUPERNatural approach. It's essentially a sample library that uses modeling for harmonic resonance.

I love the idea, but haven't been impressed with the execution on Ivory 3. Maybe I just don't like the piano they sampled. Some people love Ivory 3, though!
