Hello everyone,

I’m using a Yamaha P-525 as a MIDI controller for virtual piano instruments, mainly Pianoteq.

I’ve noticed that the default velocity response is not fully ideal for my use. Soft dynamics can be a bit difficult to control, and I often need to play quite firmly to reach a full and open sound, which sometimes feels less natural than expected.

My setup:

Yamaha P-525
Mac
Pianoteq (main instrument)
Focus on classical music and piano practice

What I’m looking for is a velocity curve that:

slightly expands the usable range between 30 and 100
makes it easier to reach higher velocities (100–127) without excessive force
still preserves good control in the soft dynamics (20–40 range)
feels musical and stable rather than overly artificial or extreme

I have already tried basic curves (linear and mild soft compression), but I would really appreciate advice from users who have experience with the P-525 and Pianoteq and have found a well-balanced and practical setup.

Any suggestions for velocity curves or MIDI settings would be highly appreciated

Arturia Keylab MK3: This is the successor of the MK2. It has hammer action, fully weighted, Fatar TP/110 keybed with aftertouch.
Is it similar enough to the MK2 that I might use the same velocity curve? Because a curve for the MK2 has been posted, but not the MK3.

One way to do it: Select the whole line, copy and then, in Pianoteq, right click over the graph and select paste

Important:

The following velocity 'curve' (more linearly than curve) is to be used with the Casio's touch set to 'Heavy 2'

Pianoteq:

Velocity = [0, 10, 127; 0, 30, 127]

This setup not only makes all the pianos sound expertly regulated, but where there was a muddiness to get pianos in general, now, with my IEMs I hear strings and soundboard clearly.

It should also work with any of the PX-S range so if any of you guys and gals wish to try these settings, please let me know if you like them.

Hope this brings Pianoteq to life for Casio PX-S**** owners.

Hello everyone, I've been using pianoteq 8 on my CLP745B with Iphone16pro for a while now. But I can't find my velocity curve. Can anyone help me? Do you have a preset to give me as a starting point or that is already well done? And also if there are any settings to touch on the CLP745, such as touch sensitivity (medium, hard, very hard etc etc). Thanks in advance!

I've found one setting from here, but doesn't work very well for me. So I've calibrated one myself and love it very much. Hope it helps:

I use this keyboard when travelling. Have the Microkey Air 61 but I guess these models will have a similar response.
Response feels very different close to fallboard due to short pivot length but I guess calibrating near the front edge would be sufficient?

I'm sure this is not a hugely popular keyboard because it's not weighted, etc., but I got it because I'm older now and hands not as strong. This keyboard responds nicely on its own, but it sounds very weak compared to the Steinberg, and I'm having challenges getting a good velocity curve. Any help appreciated.

Kawai NV5s velocity curves

This s-shaped curve has worked very well for me for most Pianoteq instruments:
Velocity = [0, 8, 17, 25, 34, 42, 51, 59, 68, 76, 85, 93, 102, 110, 119, 127; 0, 0, 10, 19, 30, 44, 62, 75, 87, 97, 104, 111, 118, 125, 127, 127]

It's based on the following principles:
- I've found an appropriate velocity range on my Kawai NV5s to be from 8 to 113 (per calibration tool in Pianoteq)
- Without particular effort to play either very loudly or softly, this curve maps my keypresses nicely within the p to mf range as I think is appropriate
- This brings out a lot of touch responsiveness within that p - mf range that makes for lively playing, though it can be too much if you don't play evenly (which has been my experience on acoustics)

That's a smoothed version of this simpler one that I made first:
